The Pininfarina Segno Space X everlasting pencil has been manufactured entirely from magnesium, so it is incredibly light – only 14g. The sleek profile is reminiscent of a rocket. The two pocket clips – one engraved with ‘Pininfarina’ – are positioned either side of the flattened barrel, which flares out into an oval profile at the grip area. The patented metal alloy tip (Ethergraf ®) produces a precise, graphite-like line, so it writes like a hard pencil. It works by leaving a bit of the ‘lead’ on the paper, but the metal alloy wears down so slowly it should last for a lifetime of use.

The Space pencil was designed with microgravity environments in mind, specifically that of the International Space Station, because unlike an ordinary graphite pencil, the Ethergraf ® tip does not produce debris that could be hazardous in such a situation. In July 2017, three Space pencils were gifted to the crew of the ISS during the VITA – Vitality, Innovation, Technology and Ability – mission manned by astronauts Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency, NASA’s Randy Bresnik and Sergey Ryazansky of Russia’s Roscosmos.
